Blog Briefs: On Burnout, with Angela Slatter

In which a bunch of authors & editors are invited to answer the question: How do you deal with creative exhaustion?

There’s something both masterful and reassuring about Angela Slatter. I know that sounds weird, but whenever I think of Angela, I think, “Power.”

I sleep. I pout. I feel sorry for myself. I sulk a lot and drape myself over furniture. I occasionally whimper ‘Oh, woe is me’. Then I pick up a book, an old favourite and it reminds me of why I love reading and why I love writing. It reminds me that one day I read it and said ‘I want to do something this awesome.’ I watch movies. I talk to my writer friends. I go to art galleries, I look in my art books. An idea sparks and I ask ‘what if?’. What if Brisbane has a colony of Weyrd? What if the Wicked Stepmother wasn’t so bad after all? What if a future society can only be saved by an ancient Sumerian ritual? Then the words start. And the words become a torrent. Then a bunch of sentences. Then the sentences form themselves into paragraphs as neatly as Roman legions. Then there are pages and pages and pages. And for a while, the well is full again.
